ROAR

Reducing Our Assault Risk

ROAR is a prevention education program for high school and college students that addresses interpersonal violence prevention including date rape, dating violence, and stalking. ROAR addresses both young men and women in academic or social group settings. The information is valuable to both genders, as it helps young men understand such issues as “No means No” and the long-term results in arrest and conviction. ROAR also addresses issues surrounding date rape such as alcohol and drug use, communication skills, dating with a group, first date behavior, and establishing a safety plan. ROAR is comprised of two components -- Megan's Project and RAD.

Around the Community

ROAR officials make special efforts to prevent violence in the Pee Dee community. During visits to local campuses, members of ROAR organize late night safety walks to determine areas where lights are not working or bushes and shrubs are overgrown, providing places for assailants to hide. Special events are also held throughout the year to call attention to the issues and provide the community with information regarding personal body safety.

Risk reduction information is distributed through a variety of methods including book marks, flyers, doorknob hangers, posters, stall stories to name a few.

What Is Megan’s Project?

Megan’s Project is a curriculum created by Safe Harbor, Inc. in Greenville in response to the death of a high school student named Megan who was stalked and murdered by a young man she had been dating. Megan’s Project focuses on developing healthy relationships, self-esteem, communication skills, and other subjects crucial to young people.
