About Us

Keeping Pee Dee Kids Safe at Home is a community awareness project located in the Pee Dee Region of South Carolina. It is sponsored by Prevent Child Abuse Pee Dee, a program of the Pee Dee Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Assault. This project is designed to focus on the prevention of the maltreatment of children, ages 0-3. Its overall goal is to increase the community’s understanding of its role in the prevention of child maltreatment.

Five Protective Factors

Research has shown that there are five protective factors which are linked to a lower incidence of child abuse and neglect.

Nurturing and Attachment - When parents and their children have warm feelings for one another, children develop trust that their parents will provide what they need to thrive, including love, acceptance, positive guidance, and protection.

Knowledge of Parenting and of Child Development - Parents who understand how children grow and develop can provide an environment where children can live up to their potential.

Parent Resilience - Parents who are emotionally resilient have a positive attitude, creatively problem solve, effectively address change and are less likely to direct anger and frustration at children.

Concrete Support for Parents - Providing information and access to community resources that families need is critical to strengthening their coping skills and preventing situations where maltreatment could occur.

Social Connections - Evidence has linked social isolation and a perceived lack of support to child maltreatment. Supportive adults in the family and community are key resources for parents when they need help.
